What is accreditation and why is it important? |
Accreditation is a process whereby a university is examined and recognized as offering programs that have reached and maintained a certain acceptable standard. In the US there are two kinds of accreditation, regional and professional. Looking at regional accreditation first, there are six non governmental bodies that examine universities, making sure that their programs and resources reach minimum standards and are of a level to have accreditation status. This status covers all the programs in the university, including online degrees.
The AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accredits the business schools that offer online MBAs in America . They review both the business schools and the programs they offer, making sure that the educational quality standards are high, and they also believe in continuous improvement through peer review, making sure that standards are maintained. They will examine the staff, the consultancy and research programs of the school and the records of school alumni to ascertain the quality and standing of the i nstitution and the program. The AACSB is an international body, and also accredits business schools and programs outside the US .
